Andrew W. Lo is the Charles E. and Susan T. Harris Professor of Finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he also serves as Director of the Laboratory for Financial Engineering.
A leading financial economist, Lo’s research spans evolutionary models of investor behavior and adaptive markets, artificial intelligence and financial technology, healthcare finance, and impact investing, with recent work focused on statistical tools for predicting clinical trial outcomes, patient-centered drug approval models, and innovative financing frameworks for deep tech and biomedical innovation.
Lo is a principal investigator at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, an external faculty member of the Santa Fe Institute, and a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Lo has published extensively in academic journals and authored influential books including The Adaptive Markets Hypothesis: An Evolutionary Approach to Understanding Financial System Dynamics. His awards include Guggenheim and Sloan Fellowships, the Paul A. Samuelson Award, the Eugene Fama Prize, and recognition as one of TIME’s “100 Most Influential People in the World.”
Lo holds a B.A. in economics from Yale University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. He has co-founded several companies and serves on multiple corporate and nonprofit boards.
