Brian M. Alexander, MD, MPH

Board Member

Dr. Brian Alexander is a co-founder of GCAR and served as CEO from 2017-2018.  He has been a Board member since its inception.

Dr. Alexander is Chief Executive Officer of Valo Health and CEO-Partner of Flagship Pioneering. Previously, he served as Senior Vice President at Roche/Genentech Pharma R&D from 2023-2024, Chief Executive Officer of Foundation Medicine from 2021-2023, and as Chief Medical Officer of Foundation Medicine from 2019-2021. He is an Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center and Founder of the Program in Regulatory Science at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

A member of the Scientific Council of the Harvard/MIT Center for Regulatory Science, Dr. Alexander’s research interests focus on innovations in clinical evidence generation to support the development of therapeutics, biomarkers, and novel endpoints.

Dr. Alexander co-authored a book, “Diagnostic Test Interpretation and Reasoning Under Uncertainty,” detailing the use of Bayesian approaches to clinical decision-making and is the recipient of the Burroughs-Wellcome Innovations in Regulatory Science Award for his work applying such approaches to clinical trial design. 

Prior to his faculty appointment at Harvard, Dr. Alexander served as a White House fellow and Special Assistant to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs

Dr. Alexander received his B.A. from Kalamazoo College, M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School, and M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his training in radiation oncology at the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program.
